Microneedling Procedure Overview
The microneedling process involves using tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries through the epidermis (top layer of skin) and into the dermis (layers underneath). This prompts the body to produce collagen and elastin, building block proteins necessary for creating skin tissue.
The skin’s repair process results in softer wrinkles and other improvements. Additionally, these superficial micro-channels allow us to more effectively administer topical gels, creams, and serums deeper into the skin.
Common Skin Concerns Addressed by Microneedling
Microneedling with the MicroPen™ can be an excellent way to alleviate blemishes such as:
- Mild to more moderate wrinkles
- Fine lines
- Surgery and injury scars
- Acne scars
- Photoaging/sunspots and some other types of hyperpigmentation
- Stretch marks
Many of these symptoms are found on the face and neck. But at La Bella, we can also use microneedling to remedy these types of concerns on the arms, hands, legs, abdomen, and back.
Microneedling vs. Other Skin Treatments
While the effects of MicroPen™ microneedling may sound similar to those from derma rollers or lasers, microneedling can hold some distinct advantages. Derma rollers typically have a fixed depth, making them less adaptable to different symptoms than the MicroPen™’s adjustable needle tip.
When used correctly, resurfacing lasers can be a great tool for treating aging skin. Lasers use focused light to produce heat that destroys certain pigment colors and vaporizes the epidermis. This is great for targeting dark spots, but often leads to complications when treating clients with naturally darker skin. Microneedling breaks up pigment mechanically and remodels the collagen without heat.
Is Microneedling Right for Me?
Microneedling is often an excellent option for men and women of all skin types exhibiting one or more skincare concerns mentioned above. However, some clients will be advised to wait until a later date, such as those who are pregnant or who have active acne, sores, or wounds near the treatment sites.
MicroPen™ Microneedling Treatment Steps
A sterile needle-tip containing 12 tiny microneedles is attached to the MicroPen™. Your skincare professional will apply a thin layer of topical gel to your skin and select the appropriate treatment depth based on your unique needs.
Next, in a single motion, the pen will be gently pressed against the skin while gliding in one direction until the entire treatment area has been covered. This results in thousands of microscopic channels throughout the target location.
The feeling associated with microneedling is similar to light sandpaper moving across the skin. While some areas are more sensitive than others, the speed of the reciprocating needle tip reduces discomfort, while the applied hydrating gel also makes the treatment more tolerable.
After Your Microneedling Session
The total recovery time depends on the needle depth used and the number of overlapping passes your skincare professional performs. On average, clients can experience minimal redness for two to four days. Utilizing quality skincare products we’ve provided can help to speed up the healing process.
Clients notice an immediate “glow” to their skin. Visible changes develop over the course of several days and weeks. Results continue to improve up to six months after the treatment as collagen production continues.
Some clients only require a single treatment once per year to achieve optimal results. However, it is recommended for most clients to receive a series of two to three sessions spaced about six to eight weeks apart per treatment.
How Much is Microneedling?
The price of a microneedling treatment plan with MicroPen™ depends on the number of symptoms that need to be treated, their severity, and the number of appointments scheduled. We also offer financing through CareCredit® and Cherry to help qualifying clients manage the cost.
